4 handled Large Castelnaudary Vase

£1,050.00

A rare and large four handled vibrant, green glazed antique vase, jardiniere or pot from the Southern town in France, Castelnaudary, circa 1850-1900. Pottery has always been a major craft in the South of France over the centuries. The four handles were used to carry these important terracotta pots from the outside and into an orangery during the winter period, often growing citrus fruits. Many of these antique earthenware glazed pots were twin handled, however, as these pots were crafted bigger, four handles were needed to move them indoors. Structurally very sound, there is slight damage to the terracotta pot and has been shown in the photographs.
