Antique French Biot Jar
Biot jars, so named, originated from Biot in Southern France, (as did Castlenaundary from Castlenaundary and Anduze from Anduze; all from the South of France). Made from terracotta, this eye catching bi-coloured biot or vase, has a vibrant yellow glaze with green ‘dribbles’ from the rim. With is rounded, shapely body, this is a delight to decorate the home, garden or conservatory. Used to preserve olives, the rim was always glazed to prevent the olive oil seeping into the terracotta of the jar. This earthenware storage jar cira 1900’s.
