Giant Antique Biot Jar or Vase

£2,300.00

Splendid giant antique 18th Century French yellow glazed Biot Jar. ‘Jarres de Biot’ were produced in Biot, a village north of Antibes, South of France. Originally hand crafted in the 18th century purely for practical purposes to store and transport oils and foods. So simple but so classically beautiful, these earthenware antique vases are so iconic from this village in France.

The earlier Biot jars (18th Century) have a slimmer appearance than the later bulbous style of production. The rim around the neck of these terracotta jars is always glazed, to prevent oils from seeping into the terracotta. The yellow glaze inside of the Biot is also a defining feature of the Biot jars and the jars would have been sealed with a wood lid.  The later Biot jars, more towards the 19th Century, are noticeably more bulbous and stockier.

This is a very appealing example of a particularly older Biot jar and would be a stunning piece for the home or garden.
