A rare Louis Bourguet Anduze Vase

£3,500.00

These antique vases are exceptionally rare, originating from one of the earliest potters in the South of France during the 19th century—a small, family-run workshop led by Louis Bourguet. This particular Anduze vase dates to the early 1800s. We previously held an identical pair bearing an inscription dated 1812, and we believe this single, floor-standing glazed terracotta example to be of a similar period.
In the 1643 property tax record (compoix), a certain Andre Bourguet appears, paying 5 livres and 8 sols in tax for practicing the trade as potter. We can then see 1820, the surname appears in the Guild, living on Rue du Pont, Rue to Albergaries, Rue de Olivettes in 1850, and finally in the Labahou neighbourhood. We can follow them until the beginning of the 20th century, when the Bourguet pottery employed several workers until 1906. Louis by then was 65 years old.

Please note, this vase is very wide at the neck and will not fit through a standard doorway.
