Antique Stone Gargoyle

Extremely rare find. This hand carved antique stone gargoyle was originally located on a Northern church to divert rainwater away from roofs or exterior walls, thereby protecting the mortar in between the stone walls. Gargoyles were designed as waterspouts – this gargoyle has a large hole at the base. During the 12th century when most of the population were illiterate, these fantastical creatures, sometimes dragons, adorned many churches. Perhaps the notion of the Church being a protective force against evil.
