Antique Stone Gargoyle

Extremely rare find. This hand carved antique stone gargoyle was originally located on a Northern church to divert rainwater away from roofs or exterior walls, thereby protecting the mortar in between the stone walls. Gargoyles were designed as waterspouts – this gargoyle has a large hole at the base. During the 12^th century when most of the population were illiterate, these fantastical creatures, sometimes dragons, adorned many churches. Perhaps the notion of the Church being a protective force against evil.
