J M Blashfield Terracotta Garden Planter

A very rare rectangular garden planter by the renowned J M Blashfield from the 1800’s.

In 1848 Blashfield added two kinds of terracotta to his range of products. One was light in colour, made from Devon and Dorset clay, and used for statuary and architectural ornaments. This garden planter is from this clay and features the markers stamp twice on the underside of the planter, ‘Blashfield’s Patent No 335’, as can be seen in his catalogue.

Back in the day, Blashfield was commissioned to make ornamental terracotta for the V&A, Hampton Court, Marlborough House, Chelsea Bridge, and Woolwich barracks. In addition to these, Blashfield was prominent in numerous country house gardens.

This planter is a fine example of the quality and craftsmanship associated with the Blashfield name. This planter has very attractive lattice design around the body, much of it missing due to age. However, this doesn’t detract from both its elegance and historically significance of such a piece.
