Late 16th century German salt glaze Bellarmine jug and 3 smaller examples

£780.00

A circa 1700 salt-glazed stoneware Bellarmine jug, with Arabic numeral 3 to the shoulders and lightly strigulated body, together with three other small samples.

Bellarmine has become an over-reaching term for this style of continental salt-glazed stoneware and were possibly a jokey reference to Cardinal Robert Bellarmine who was anti-alcohol (which jugs are often used for), though there is a lot of conjecture on this.
