Set of Four French Cockle Pots

In France, cockles were traditionally grown in terracotta pots using a method that catered to the natural habits of these shellfish. The process involved placing the terracotta cockle pots, also known as “pot à coquilles,” allowing water and nutrients to circulate while keeping predators out. These pots were typically made from clay and provided a suitable habitat for cockles. The pots were placed in the intertidal zones of estuaries and coastal areas where cockles naturally thrive. These zones experience regular tidal movements, which are essential for providing the cockles with a fresh supply of water and food. Young cockles, or spat, were introduced into the pots. As the tides ebbed and flowed, the cockles inside the pots would feed on plankton and other small organic matter. The terracotta material of the pots helped regulate the temperature and provided a stable environment for the cockles to grow. Once the cockles reached the desired size, they were harvested by removing the pots from the water and collecting the mature shellfish. The design of the pots made it easy to retrieve the cockles without harming them or the environment.

These are a delightful pair of four cockle pots, no damage. Would look superb at a beachside residence.
